GAY NEWS AT HOME AND ABROAD  Submitted by Roy Liebman

UNITED STATES

A major study on gay parenthood and adoption has found:

        More than 50% of gay men and 41% of Lesbians have at least one child;
        65,500 adopted children have a Lesbian or gay parent;
14,100 foster children live with a gay or Lesbian person
Gay and Lesbian parents are raising at least 3% of the children in the United States

CALIFORNIA

The University of California, Los Angeles became the very first university to have an endowed chair devoted exclusively to the researching of same-sex laws and public policy. More than $1 million was donated by a local philanthropic gay couple. This gift will greatly facilitate academic research in the field of gay rights laws.

MASSACHUSETTS

It appears that gay marriage in Massachusetts, the only state to allow it so far, is safe from attack. The legislature has blocked a measure to put a constitutional amendment about gay marriage on the ballot. The proposal to allow a public vote failed by the overwhelming margin of 45 for to 151 against.

NEW JERSEY

In February New Jersey became the third state after Vermont and Connecticut to grant gay couples the same legal rights as married couples. Those couples who had been in civil unions or marriage granted by other states or countries automatically received the rights of civil union in New Jersey.

NEW YORK

The New York City Controller estimated that allowing gay marriage in New York would add $142 million to New York City's economy in the three years following approval and $184 million to the state's, as well as $8 million in additional taxes and a savings of $100 million in health care costs.

CANADA

They say that the Canadian Mounties (RCMP) always get their man. This is now literally true since two male Mounties married each other in the first such wedding between two RCMPs. Canada is one of the countries that legally allows gays to marry.

On the other hand, the Anglican Church of Canada narrowly voted to defeat a resolution that would have allowed their member churches to officially bless gay civil unions. The Anglican Church has been in turmoil since the consecration of openly gay V. Gene Robinson as a bishop of the church.

GERMANY

A twelve year old boy became the youngest person ever to receive permission for a sex-change operation. He was determined to be transgender at the age of ten.

GREAT BRITAIN

In January, now ex-Prime Minister Tony Blair announced that faith-based adoption agencies would not be exempt from anti-discrimination laws. Such an exemption was sought by church leaders so they would not be "forced" to place children with gay couples.

ITALY

Thousands of Italians rallied to support a proposed law to grant legal rights to same sex couples  such as hospital visits and inheritance. NOTE FROM ROY: I was in Rome at the time and saw the passion and hope expressed by demonstrators who face an uphill battle to get the law passed. The Church is against it; support mainly comes from the left wing of Italy's government, including the Communists.

MEXICO

Macho Mexico has been among the leaders in Latin America for gay rights. Mexico City allows same-sex civil unions and even had city-hired mariachi bands to serenade gay couples. The city also allows conjugal visits for gay prisoners. Mexico's Supreme Court ruled that soldiers cannot be expelled from the military for being HIV-positive.

SPAIN

Legislation is being introduced to compensate gays and Lesbians for their harsh treatment under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Under his rule homosexuality was a crime and thousands were imprisoned or sent to mental hospitals under appalling conditions.

ZANA DON'T Reviewed by Gary Booher

Yes, Yes, Yes.
This is absolutely the most spectacular thing I have seen in memory.
It far exceeded my expectations (even though I knew it was Off-Broadway). From the Opening song-dance production number to the Finale, it ROCKS.  Talented and infectious cast all moving to fantastic choreography.  Engaging gay fantasy that grabs you to laugh, cry and sometimes break your heart.  Even when it looks like the world will fall apart, there are happy endings everywhere.
I thought it might merely be  fluff, but never considered that it could move me so much.  It was a full house and received a standing ovation by everyone.

When I told the Theatre's Assistant Director Richard Israel that it was worth more than the $32 full price, he said to tell my friends now because the price was going up in September.

Although on the warm side, the Air Conditioning was not intolerable (it's all those bodies).  Only some of the seats are hard.  My recommendation, be near the first door on the left in the lobby for when it opens.

The best seating for view and comfort is the first row of the center section facing the backwall (seating is U-shaped).  That would be straight ahead from the door entry.  These seats (and maybe others on the far side) are padded with a vinyl covering (may be sticky for some - I was okay with cotton clothing).  The seats to the right and near the door are hard.

It is a rather large production that uses ever inch of theatre.  Although all over the place, the cast still plays mostly front and center, and the second row anywhere will strain to see what is happening in the foreground and the continual dancing.

I was sitting dead center of the first row of the center section, and I felt the same as my friend who afterwards said that it was just like they were playing to US.

The First Act is a little long at 1 hour twenty minutes (empty the bladder before).  The Second Act is a short 35 minutes.

It is nice that this theatre and production has a Company Director, Assistant Company Director, and Play Director that are all Gay.  I have known and been following Les Hanson, Richard Israel, and Nick DeGrucio for many years and love and respect all of their work.

I will stop now.
But as I said, Zanna DO.

NOW PLAYING at  the Lyric-Hyperion Theatre, 2106 Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake.  The ticket price is  $32. You can order your tickets today at (323) 906-2500 or www.tix.com. Running time: 2 hours, 25 minutes.

A/PGF Night will be on Saturday, August 4th.  If you can not attend this night, this production will continue until September 2nd.  Friday and Saturdays at 8 PM. Sundays at 3 PM

FLYING WITH EXCESS BAGGAGE CAN BE COSTLY....contributed by Bill Tom

With the emerging of more low fare airlines, you may be hit with extra fees for baggage.  To make up for their very low prices, some airlines are beginning to assess charges on  overweight baggage.  This is one thing you don't need on the start of you trip.  The charges may be based on weight and as well as on distance.  So it could be a very costly low far trip.

In the past most airlines  ignored baggage over limit except  if the items were grossly overweight.  So now  it behooves you to read the airlines' policy on their ticket folder.  Be warned that each airlines policy varies, as to a domestic, international, first class, or coach class.

What are some of the things you can do to avoid the weighty shock?  For one, check what you packing  and avoid things that you "may" need.  See if you can have items do double duty, e.g. bringing a sport suit instead of a suit, where the coat and trousers may be worn  separately.  You should also check the weight of you luggage while empty.  Surprisingly in some cases it may add up to 9 pounds.  So look around for the lightest model if you're planning to travel a lot.

You might also consider leaving out items, especially one that can be purchase at your destination.  If you still have problems with you packing, maybe you should consult an expert, like Sir Edmund Hillary.
