Echo
Mountain Hike
Sunday -
January 27th
Starting promptly at 10:30 AM
(please meet at 10:15 AM at the trailhead)
Distance: 5 miles
Moderate Elevation
Gain: 1400’
In
the 1890s a train carried Angelinos to a resort perched on
the mountain slopes above Altadena. The complex of hotels
and taverns was known as “The White City”, because it was
painted stark white and visible from the LA basin below.
Wind fueled fires have long since destroyed the
development; today all that remains are the ruins and a
photographic display. We hike the short, steep, trail to
the “The White City” and soak in the views.
Hardy hikers will continue to Inspiration Point which adds
another 4 miles and 1300 feet elevation gain to the hike.
We will meet at 10:15 AM at the trailhead with prompt
departure at 10:30 AM. Please be on time!
Directions:
Take the Lake Ave exit from the 210
Freeway in Altadena and drive north to the end of Lake
Ave). On your right (east), marked by a sign painted on a
stone pillar, is the beginning of the Sam Merrill Trail to
Echo Mountain.
The hike will take approximately
3 hours round trip.
Bring:
Water to drink along the exposed trail,
shoes
with good tread, sun protection and snacks to share at our
destination (snacks is optional). After taking in the
view, we’ll retreat to the picnic tables in the grove of
coulter pines.
Rain cancels
(but threat of rain does not...be prepared!)
