Rick Passed On Friday, November 7, 2025

Dear APGF Members,

We often speak of APGF as a family. I felt that sense of belonging still held steadfast when I introduced my Gary to our organization not so long ago. To be honest, when I agreed to become your President, I felt that the cohesiveness, which characterized our formative years, was less visible. However, during these last several years, I’ve come to know each one of you on a personal level. We have become a family by any measure of the word.

Rick Shaffer was a member who defined warmth, kindness, and the positive attitude so lacking in today’s turmoil. In short, he personified APGF. I attempted a visit to drop off flowers just days ago, but they had already moved him back to intensive care. The conversation I wanted to have with Rick involved his “out of body experience” he had years ago. I confided my own past experience and he told me that he doesn’t discuss his with many people due to their lack of belief. So, I was actually very excited to have that conversation with him after his recent “stroke.”

I know I speak for most of you when I say that losing Rick has left us all grieving, and rightfully so. Our condolences to Ming-Jen Chen. Like any family, we have our favorites and Rick was definitely one of ours. Our APGF family will help organize a proper celebration for the time he graced us with his never-ending smile and loving heart.

On behalf of your APGF Board
